Focus on: Kimono

by Opificio / Friday, 19 April 2024 / Published in Blog, Blog

Focus on: Kimono

What is a kimono? It is a traditional Japanese garment, characterized by long and wide sleeves and a T-shaped form. It is a wrap-around robe, secured with a belt (obi) around the waist, which can be worn by both men and women.

Kimono are made from various fabrics, lightweight and breathable for summer, or heavier for winter. They are often decorated with embroidery, prints, or paintings.

There are different types of kimono, each with specific rules and functions. In the past, the shape remained the same, but the colors and fabric workmanship were not just aesthetic elements but true indicators of social class.

Originally, this garment was worn by the Japanese aristocracy, serving as an undergarment. Over time, it became a proper outerwear and was adopted by samurai and later by the rest of the population.

In the early 20th century, Japan opened up to the international market, sparking a passion for this country among Westerners and, in turn, for kimono.

Over the years, no designer could ignore the allure of the kimono, and it has been proposed and interpreted in various ways. From Paul Poiret and Madeleine Vionnet to John Galliano and Saint Laurent.
